UFA Contributes to Canada’s first Agri-Food Sustainability Index

UFA is proud to play a part in the National Index on Agri-Food Performance, Canada's first sustainability index published last week for the country's agriculture and food sector. Our co-operative was one of an unprecedented private-public coalition made up of 129 contributing partners that helped drive this work forward.

The Index does not score individual producers or companies; it presents consolidated national results from production to food retail, reporting on positive sustainability performance, areas needing improvement and the data gaps. The Index's 20 indicators detail over 130 metrics including measures within the environment, food integrity (including food safety), economic and societal well-being priorities.

"Food security and climate change are two of the most important and pressing issues facing our world today. Canada has a key role to play feeding the world and in managing environmental impacts, including reducing emissions. Our production and sustainability goals need to be achieved with a balanced approach. The Index's consolidated view and the breadth of measurement will help our industry and Canada move sustainable initiatives forward," says Selene Munro, Director Sustainability at UFA. "It also fosters collaboration and aligns industry partners towards a common goal and purpose."
