The UFA Rural Communities Foundation Names 2020 Award Recipients

Four Alberta communities share $100,000 from the Rural Communities Foundation grant

Calgary – Wednesday October 14, 2020: The Rural Communities Foundation is pleased to announce the winners of the $100,000 grant for projects that enrich education, recreation and culture in Alberta.

The mandate of the foundation is to improve the sustainability of farmers and ranchers in Alberta by improving access to funding for educational, recreational and cultural facilities and programs in Alberta.

During Co-operative Week we are pleased to announce the four communities who will share the $100,000 in RCF funding:

The Rotary Club of Vegreville will receive $15,000 for their Vegreville Rotary Skatepark. This skatepark includes a modern concrete skatepark along with a family park with walking trails, picnic tables and benches to encourage interaction between community members of all ages.

The Castor and District Museum Society will receive $27,250 for repairs and renovations to their heritage elevator. This elevator is one of the oldest wooden elevators in the province and is an important link to Castor's history.

The 20 Mile Irvine Rodeo Committee will receive $37,250 for their 20 Mile Rodeo Arena upgrade. The arena and grounds are a vital facility to the small hamlet and surrounding farms and ranches. The upgrades will allow residents to continue to join together for sport, friendship and community.

The Pincher Creek and District Historical Society will receive $20,500 for the Colpman's Drug Store and Soda Fountain in their Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village. The building will add a missing element to the historic village and be the home for modern ice cream shop for visitors.

Congratulations to this year's recipients.

"There were many strong applicants and the judges had a difficult time narrowing the choices to just four winners," said RCF board chair, Harvey Hagman.

"Through these applications we saw the strength of rural communities and the commitment to keep rural communities sustainable."

In 2019, the winning projects were in Paradise Valley, Delia and Onoway. Information and photos of these projects are on the website. rcfufa.com.

The UFA Rural Communities Foundation announced a $500,000 commitment over five years to rural communities. We look forward to giving another $100,000 in 2021.

As an agricultural co-operative, UFA has always given back to its members. The RCF is just one more way we support rural communities.
