Deadline Extended for Alberta Water Management Survey

The Government of Alberta is conducting a Water Availability Engagement Survey, providing an opportunity for Albertans to share their input on ways to increase water availability and improve the water management system in the province. This is a crucial chance for our members and customers to voice their opinions and contribute to shaping the future of water management in Alberta.

It is UFA's position that:

· The long-term commitment by the Government of Alberta to fund infrastructure projects to increase water storage capacity across the province remains the single most important issue to maintain water security and increase water availability across the province. Flood and drought mitigation can be achieved through these efforts.

· Clawbacks to large license holders would hurt Alberta's agriculture sector, which has proven to be the bedrock of Alberta's economy. Irrigated crop production generates about 4.5 times more revenue per hectare than dryland crop production. 48% of the total feeder cattle in the province are associated with irrigation districts.

· While water use in Alberta's agriculture sector, particularly on irrigational land is extremely efficient, incentives and grant programs under the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership (SCAP) should be reviewed for increased funding to endorse new technologies to help support efficiency efforts.

· Water health is crucial to the vitality of Alberta's agriculture industry and irrigation use. Upstream water usage by any industry which then runs downstream to be used for irrigation purposes must be protected and provincial regulations must be in place to ensure the safety and cleanliness of the water. Crops and livestock depend on it.

The deadline for the survey has been extended to January 24, giving everyone more time to participate. UFA's official submission will be submitted prior to the deadline. Your feedback is valuable in helping to develop effective and sustainable water management strategies.
